Spring Break Prep: How to Care for Your Braces on the Road

Spring break travel is exciting for South Jersey families, but if your child is in braces or Invisalign, a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping treatment on track. We'll give you everything you need to pack, plan and protect that smile wherever the road takes you.

Spring break is almost here and whether your family is heading down the shore, flying to Disney or road-tripping to the mountains, one thing stays the same: orthodontic care doesn't take a vacation. As a parent, you've already invested in your child's smile. A week of travel doesn't have to put that investment at risk. With a few smart strategies, you can enjoy every moment of the trip and come home with your treatment timeline completely intact.

Before You Leave: Schedule a Pre-Trip Appointment

One of the best things you can do before any extended trip is schedule a quick check-in at our Mount Laurel office. We'll confirm that no wires are loose, no brackets are at risk and that your child's treatment is in a good place heading into break. This is especially important if your last adjustment was more than four weeks ago.

Already on Invisalign? Make sure your child has their current tray, their previous tray and their next tray in hand before departure. (For more on how Invisalign works for busy families, read our post on Discreet Invisalign for Mount Laurel Professionals.)

Pack Your Orthodontic Travel Kit

Building a dedicated ortho bag before you pack anything else will save you serious stress mid-trip. Here's what we recommend:

The Essential Packing List

  • Travel toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste — Brushing after meals is especially important with braces. A compact brush makes it easy to clean up in airport restrooms or at rest stops.
  • Orthodontic wax — Always have it on hand. A poking wire on a long drive is nobody's idea of fun.
  • Floss threaders or a water flosser — Food gets trapped more easily with braces. Don't skip this step. (See our full guide on How to Care for Your Orthodontic Appliances.)
  • Tweezers, nail file and nail trimmer- Tweezers can help redirect a wire that has popped out the back, nail files can help smooth rough edges of your Invisalign trays and nail trimmers can help to clip pokey wires.
  • Lip balm — New brackets and dry airplane air are a tough combination. Keep lips moisturized.
  • Retainer case — If your child is on Invisalign or a retainer, never let it get wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant. It goes in the case, period.
  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen — Post-adjustment soreness can catch you off guard during an active trip.
  • Elastics- If we have you wearing elastics, make sure the pack them and wear them as instructed during your vacation.
  • Our office number — Save (856) 242-2126 in your phone before you leave. You can text at any hour if any issues arise or you have questions.

Eating Smart: Braces-Friendly Travel Foods

Vacation eating is one of the biggest risk factors for broken brackets and bent wires. Theme parks, boardwalks and tourist spots are full of tempting foods that are hard, sticky, or crunchy — exactly what we'd ask your child to avoid during treatment.

Foods to Avoid on Vacation

  • Corn on the cob, whole apples and raw carrots (cut them first)
  • Caramel apples, saltwater taffy and gummy candies
  • Hard pretzels, crusty baguettes and ice chewing
  • Popcorn — yes, even at the movies

Better Choices While Traveling

  • Soft sandwiches, wraps and pasta dishes
  • Yogurt, smoothies and soft fruits like bananas or berries
  • Grilled chicken, fish and rice bowls
  • Ice cream (without hard mix-ins!) and soft desserts

Invisalign on the Road: Special Considerations

If your child is using Invisalign aligners, travel is relatively straightforward, but there are a few rules that are easy to slip on during vacation mode:

  • Wear your trays 20–22 hours per day. Vacation is not a break from your aligners. Even one week of inconsistent wear can push your treatment timeline back.
  • Clean aligners every morning and night. Carry a small aligner cleaning kit or use a soft toothbrush with cool water.
  • Bring both your previous tray and the next set of trays. If a tray is lost or damaged, having the previous set to wear while you contact our office can make a real difference.
  • Never wrap aligners in napkins. They end up in the trash. Always use the case.

A Word from your OrthodonTish

Every spring break, I think about my patients who are mid-treatment heading out on exciting family trips. I love that families around Mount Laurel are out there making memories and I want to make sure orthodontic care never gets in the way of that.

In my practice, I always tell parents: broken brackets and missed aligner hours during vacation are two of the most common reasons treatment runs longer than expected. They're also almost entirely preventable. Before you leave, even a quick call to my office can help you feel confident about what to expect.

I also want parents to know that if something does go wrong on the road — a wire pops out, a bracket breaks — don't panic. Use orthodontic wax to cover anything sharp, call us, and we'll walk you through what to do. We serve families all across South Jersey and we want your vacation to be stress-free. That's why I always make sure my patients leave with both knowledge and a way to reach us.

When to Contact Our Office

Most minor issues (ie a little soreness, a small piece of wax needed) don't require emergency care. But call us right away at (856) 242-2126 if:

  • A wire is sticking out and causing pain that wax doesn't relieve
  • A bracket has completely come off a tooth
  • Your child's aligner is cracked or missing and you don't have a backup
  • There is unusual swelling or pain in the gum area

Heading back soon? You can always book your post-trip appointment online before you even get home.

Frequently Asked Questions: Braces and Travel

Can my child skip wearing their Invisalign aligners during vacation?

No — even a week of skipped or reduced aligner wear can delay treatment progress. The recommended wear time is 20–22 hours per day, regardless of vacation.

What do I do if a bracket breaks while we're traveling?

Use orthodontic wax to cover the bracket and any sharp edges. Call or text Amazing Brace Orthodontics at (856) 242-2126 — we can advise you over the phone and schedule a repair appointment when you return.

Should I schedule an appointment before spring break?

Yes, we recommend a pre-trip check-in, especially if your child's last adjustment was more than four weeks ago. This gives us a chance to make sure everything is secure before you travel.

Are there braces-safe snacks I can bring through airport security?

Absolutely. Soft granola bars (not crunchy), peanut butter and soft bread, bananas, cheese sticks, pouched smoothies etc all work well. Avoid trail mix with hard nuts or seeds. Do not eat popcorn.

What if my child loses their Invisalign tray on vacation?

Call us immediately. In the meantime, if they have a previous tray, they can wear that.
