The Best Time to Start Orthodontic Treatment Is Before School Starts — Here's Why
Timing Matters More Than You Think
As a parent in Mount Laurel, Moorestown, Cherry Hill, or Marlton, your schedule is packed the moment September hits. Between school drop-offs, after-school activities, and homework routines, fitting in orthodontic appointments (especially early in treatment when they're most frequent) can feel impossible.
That's exactly why summer is the strategic sweet spot.
Starting braces or Invisalign during the summer months gives your child time to adjust to their new appliance before the pressures of the school year kick in. The first few weeks of orthodontic treatment are when most of the adjustment happens — mild soreness, learning to care for appliances, getting used to speaking differently with aligners. Summer lets kids work through all of that in a low-stress environment, so by the time school starts, they're already pros.
What the AAO Says About Starting Early
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have their first orthodontic evaluation no later than age 7. By this age, children have enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to detect jaw growth issues, crowding, or bite problems — many of which aren't visible to parents or even general dentists.
This doesn't mean your 7-year-old will be leaving with braces on their teeth. There are actually three possible outcomes from an early evaluation: no treatment needed right now, a "monitor and watch" plan as teeth develop, or a recommendation for early interceptive treatment. All three outcomes are valuable and all three are best caught early.
If your child is in that "watch and wait" phase, summer is a perfect time to check in, take updated X-rays and confirm their development is on track before another school year passes.
The Case for Phase 1 (Early Interceptive) Orthodontics
For some children between the ages of 6 and 10, Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is recommended before all permanent teeth have erupted. This isn't about cosmetics. It's about guiding jaw growth, creating room for incoming teeth, and preventing more complex (and more expensive) treatment later.
Common issues that benefit from early intervention include:
- Crossbites
- Significant crowding or spacing
- Protruding front teeth (which are more prone to injury)
- Underbites or overbites affecting jaw development
- Thumb or finger habits affecting bone structure
Starting Phase 1 treatment over the summer means your child's jaw is actively being guided during the months when there's no pressure to miss school or activities for appointments.
It's Not Just for Kids — Adults, This Applies to You Too
Summer is equally strategic for adult patients considering Invisalign or braces. Millennial adults often put off treatment because they can't picture fitting appointments into a busy work schedule. But summer vacations, lighter meeting loads, and more flexible calendars make it the ideal time to finally start.
At Amazing Brace Orthodontics, Invisalign is offered at the same price as traditional braces — no upcharge, no pressure. Learn more about all of our orthodontic options for every age.

A Note From Your OrthodonTish
I recommend the summer window to families at my practice all the time, and here's the reason: the kids who start in June or July come back in September confident. The initial soreness has passed, they've figured out their oral hygiene routine, and they're not trying to navigate all of that while also starting a new grade or adjusting to a new school.
In my practice, I also see this as a great opportunity for parents. Summer gives us more scheduling flexibility without competing with school dismissal times or homework nights. It's genuinely the smoothest time of year to get started, and I love being able to send a patient off to a new school year with a smile they're already proud of.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
When is the best age to start orthodontic treatment?
The AAO recommends a first evaluation by age 7, though treatment timing varies by child. Many kids begin comprehensive treatment (traditional braces or Invisalign) between ages 11 and 14. Starting the evaluation process early, ideally in summer before a new school year, ensures your child is never behind the curve.
Will my child miss school for orthodontic appointments?
Not if you time it right. When you start in summer, the most frequent early appointments happen before school begins. Ongoing visits are typically every 6–10 weeks and can be scheduled during our after school/work hours.
Does Amazing Brace Orthodontics offer free consultations?
Yes. Your initial consultation at Amazing Brace Orthodontics includes a comprehensive exam and custom treatment plan at no obligation. Book your appointment here.
Is Invisalign an option for kids and teens?
Absolutely. Invisalign Teen is a popular option for older children and teenagers who are responsible enough to wear aligners consistently. Dr. Tish will recommend the best option based on your child's individual needs.
What if my child is nervous about coming in?
We get it! It can be intimiadating. But we have Chester for exactly that reason. He has helped many in the past, and continues to help anxious patients feel at ease during appointments. Amazing Brace is built to be a warm, welcoming place for the whole family.
